Arboretum Explorer Days are full days of activity, comprising indoor classroom-based workshops, guided walks and an Act of Remembrance, and are available at the cost of £8 per student.

Join us at the Arboretum to find Stick Man and his friends, as you explore 150-acre site using our outdoor Stick Man Trail. Students will also have the opportunity to create their very own Stickperson, before settling down to watch the film in our indoor classroom space.

Students will have the opportunity to explore our 150-acre site using our brand-new Animals in Remembrance Trail, before taking part in Arts and Crafts based classroom activities.
For: Early Years & Key Stage 1
Through hands on activities, guided tours and storytelling, students will learn about the vital roles of emergency services and bravery of those who serve to protect others. This explorer day has a key focus on British Values, and will encompass an Act of Remembrance.
For: Key Stage 2 & Key Stage 3
As well as a guided walk around the Arboretum, students will explore the importance of communication in WWI using key artefacts, before challenging themselves to break codes in groups to solve a secret mission.
This will be followed by a dive into one of four roles that people had during WWI, going beyond the Tommy in the trench and focusing on the roles of Tunneler, Land Girl, Stretcher Bearer and Signaller.
For: Key Stage 2
Students will explore what it might be like to have stayed in the city during the Blitz, and why some families chose to do this, as well as learning about rationing to see how meals in the 1940’s compare to today. The second classroom session will touch on why children were evacuated before delving into suitcases to think about what evacuees might have packed, in addition to testing their communication and teamwork skills with a logic activity.
For: Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3 & Key Stage 4
This activity explores the stories of people, from different backgrounds, who all took risks and showed great courage and determination to save the lives of Jewish people during the Holocaust.
Students will identify reasons for the actions of heroes across Europe and why some people became rescuers during the Holocaust. This session also introduces wider themes around how the Holocaust came about.
For: Key Stage 3 & Key Stage 4
With a focus on the transition from traditional to contemporary remembrance, students will explore modern day conflicts and what it means to remember since the beginning of the First World War. Through classroom-based activities and a guided tour, students will have a hands-on experience learning stories of the conflicts that have affected us all in more recent times.
