Gallery Three

Published in 2024 ‘Arbie and the magical lights’ is an enchanting story about a curious young owl called Arbie and his wise friend Bear.

1000 local primary school children have been reading the story about Arbie and Bear with the Arboretum’s Learning & Participation team, exploring how light can help us to remember.

The beautiful Lanterns of Remembrance, hung here at the Arboretum, are their own creative response.

Led by Arbie the Owl, this inspiring project invited KS1 and KS2 pupils to take part in two creative school workshops.

First, the children immersed themselves in an interactive storytelling adventure, bringing Arbie and the magical lights to life though imagination and play.

Then, in a hands-on arts session, they worked with an artist to design and decorate their own personal lights of Remembrance, each one a glowing contribution to this stunning final installation.

The Guiding Lights Project

This exhibition is part of a wider project, titled Guiding Lights, showcasing the power of storytelling through collective creativity.

Working with a wide range of participants in schools and community settings, the project aims to weave the threads of arts, culture, history, and remembrance, representing the National Memorial Arboretum's commitment to being freely open to all.
